3K, 12K and 18K carbon in padel rackets: what really changes
Published on 6 November 2026 · by Luca Bicchieri, PadelMetrix
3K, 12K and 18K tell you how many carbon filaments make up each bundle of the weave: 3,000, 12,000, 18,000. It is not a quality ranking: a higher number doesn't mean a better racket, or a more expensive one. How a racket feels also depends on the core, the number of layers, the resin and the frame.
What the K means
Carbon faces are made of a fabric woven from bundles of filaments. The K is the thousands of filaments per bundle: with 3K the bundles are thin and the weave is tight, with 12K and 18K the bundles are thicker (PadelPROShop). It changes the weave, and with it some of the stiffness and feel, but the number alone doesn't tell you how the racket will play (see also the glossary).
The differences you usually read about
- 3K: drier, more direct feel, lots of control; power depends more on your arm.
- 12K: a compromise between firmness and comfort, suited to all-round players.
- 18K: a more solid, explosive response when you accelerate, more vibration outside the sweet spot.
These are retailers' qualitative descriptions, without lab measurements: the same article that offers them reminds readers that "more filaments" doesn't mean "better" and that the overall construction matters a lot (PadelPROShop).
What our database shows
We counted the type of carbon stated for the 309 adult rackets in the database. 3K is the most common (57 models), followed by 12K (42) and 18K (20).
| Face | Models | Median list price | For advanced or pro |
|---|---|---|---|
| 3K carbon | 57 | €310 | 47% |
| 12K carbon | 42 | €349.90 | 57% |
| 18K carbon | 20 | €296.90 | 70% |
| 24K carbon | 13 | €330 | 85% |
| Fiberglass (no carbon stated) | 64 | €130 | 5% |
Two things stand out. First, the median prices of 3K, 12K and 18K are very close: the type of carbon doesn't explain the price. Second, the real difference is between carbon and fiberglass: fiberglass faces cost much less and are aimed mostly at beginners.
Which to choose
- You're starting out or have arm problems: fiberglass or carbon with a soft core; the K matters little.
- You play a control and placement game: you'll often get on well with 3K.
- You play all-round or attacking padel: look at 12K and 18K, but always check shape, weight and balance before the number.
